Core

core

Core exercises have taken a front row in popularity during the current decade, due in part to the advent of Pilates, a system of exercise created by Joseph Pilates which focuses on developing the “core”, or center part of the body. The core refers to the abdominal muscles and wall that are close to the spine, along with the lower back, pelvic area and what is commonly called the “girdle” of the body. Core exercises focus on the abs, lower back, hips and upper thighs. Pilates borrows heavily from another body discipline – Yoga – that places primary focus on and around the spinal area, promoting both spinal alignment and flexibility. We believe that a strong core along with spinal flexibility greatly enhances other forms of exercise such as weight training and cardio, and also supports good digestion, injury prevention, poise and balance, and weight control. Core training is an integral part of Zen’s fitness curriculum.
